At this point, your loved one may no longer be able to live alone. This can be a difficult conversation, so enter it with love and compassion.

Making the decision to uproot your life and move closer to a senior loved one can be hard. Be sure to discuss your choice with everyone involved to make sure it is the right choice. Once you’ve decided to move, put a plan in place to ensure that your life isn’t put on hold while you support your aging loved one. The most important thing is to approach the situation with love and compassion so that you can support your loved one as they age.

Selling a Loved One’s Home After They’ve Passed Away

Losing a loved one is a painful process, and it’s one that often stretches far beyond that first mourning stage. We all know to expect the heartache of initial loss, as well as the emotional and mental toll of planning a funeral. However, most people don’t think about the challenges that come

           afterward

until it’s upon them. Selling a loved one’s house is one such challenge.

This process can be cathartic, challenging, numbing, and often manages to be all of these things and more. To help, we’ve put together the following guidance for how to make this process as easy and efficient as possible, as well as some tips for helping your mind, heart, and soul begin to heal.

            Get Organized

When it comes to selling a loved one’s house, one of the most important — and often, most challenging — tasks is to get organized. You’ll need to find a lot of paperwork before you can get the house sale process rolling. If your loved ones had a strong filing system, this might not be that rough. If not, however, you may need to do some serious searching in order to find what you need. If you cannot find a certain document, you may be able to request copies.

This organizing process can be hectic, but it also has the potential to

significantly. Once you have all the paperwork you need, you’ve crossed a major item off your to-do list. Never underestimate the psychological power of being prepared.

            Hire an Estate Lawyer

Many people think they’ll only need an estate lawyer if things get messy, but the reality is an estate lawyer makes sense no matter what. Even when there are no disputes or conflicts along the way, a lawyer will be able to help you make sense of any

If you’re not sure how to find a good estate lawyer, ask friends and family who have lost loved ones who they’ve used. Not only will this help you get some names to consider, but you can also get a sense of how trustworthy and efficient a lawyer might be. The American Bar Association notes that a great recommendation from a friend can help you feel more confident with

            Connect With an Agent

Although it’s possible to sell a house on your own, a real estate agent is a wise investment, especially when handling an emotionally challenging sale. Connect with a real estate agent you can trust to find interested sellers and help you decipher the best offers. Not only will you get the benefit of their real estate connections, but you’ll also have an informed ally who can help you navigate the process with ease.

Many people work to get a loved one’s home sold as quickly as possible. Although this might work for some people, and it

reduce the amount of time you’re directly reminded of your grief, it’s not always the best bet, psychologically speaking. For many people, the act of cleaning out a loved one’s home and preparing it for sale is extremely powerful on an emotional level. This process can provide catharsis, allow you to revisit cherished memories, and give you a sense of connection with your lost loved one.

Approximately one-third of adults age 65 years or older fall in their home each year, resulting in injury, long-term disability and premature loss of independence. By 2030, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated the cost related to these kinds of injuries to be over $100 Billion a year. In an effort to help reduce and prevent falls and their associated costs, Age Safe America developed this program as a way to help professionals educate older adults and families to make preparations now to ensure ongoing freedom and independence for all.

Five Ways Music Can Help Your Loved One with Dementia

When a loved one has dementia, it can be so hard to connect with them. As the disease progresses, it becomes harder to continue conversations or keep up with the hobbies they once enjoyed. That’s why music can play such an important role in their care plan.

A recent study showed that enjoying music is one of the longest enduring abilities for people with dementia. Even patients in the most advanced stages of the disease are still able to connect over a familiar song. Music is so beneficial that the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America regularly puts out new articles and events on the topic. According to the AFA, “When used appropriately, music can shift mood, manage stress-induced agitation, stimulate positive interactions, facilitate cognitive function and coordinate motor movements.”

This probably isn’t all news to you. After all, most people would agree that listening to music can be relaxing. Sharing music with someone is a common way we connect with our friends and family. And we know that dancing comes naturally to people - just play some music to a baby and watch them start instantly moving to the rhythm.

So how can you use music as part of your loved one’s care plan?

           1. Find time to just sit and listen to familiar music

A great way to connect is to just sit down and put on some familiar tunes. Think about the music that you already know your loved one enjoys. Look for songs they probably already know the words to. Listening to music and singing along activates almost every part of the brain - especially if you nod your head or tap your foot along with the beat.

           2. Watch older musicals that will bring back memories

Older musicals with iconic songs are a great entertainment option for people with dementia. Of course, not everyone likes musicals. But a classic like The Sound of Music is a good starting point. There is something to please everyone between the historical setting, memorable songs, light love story, and adorable cast.

           3. Use music as a tool for regulating your loved one’s mood

To calm down an agitated person with dementia, play something slow and calming. Soothing songs will help your loved one relax. If your loved one seems to be feeling down, try some upbeat music with a faster beat.

           4. Allow music to bring you closer together

Many people with dementia are still very physically capable. Dancing to music - even if sitting down - is an amazing way to connect. Many people with dementia are uncomfortable with physical contact with those they don’t fully recognize. Holding hands or slow dancing helps your loved one get some much-needed physical contact in a non-threatening way. It’s also a great way to stay active for older adults who don’t have as many opportunities to stretch their muscles.

           5. Reminisce about songs or singers from the past

Do you know what your parents’ wedding song was? Find an old concert stub while cleaning mom’s room? Know that your grandma used to play piano at church? Music is a great way to spark conversations that might not otherwise start naturally. Put on a specific song and use it as a prompt. Play the wedding song and then say, “Tell me about your wedding.” Put on a specific artist and ask “Did you ever listen to this song with your friends?” You’ll be surprised at the memories that music can bring forward.

"Music is one of the most powerful tools in your caregiver toolbox."

Your Legacy Matters

Did you know that whether you realize it or not you are constructing your life legacy? We all will leave a legacy behind- whether you are aware of it or not; your legacy is how you will be

           remembered

by those you touched during your life. What you will leave behind is nothing more than the memories you made for people to hold onto.

The question is, “will the legacy you leave be one that you would be proud of and (more importantly) that your family will appreciate?”

Most people don’t put much thought into what “situation” or “set of circumstances” they will leave their family in if they should suddenly fall ill, be injured, or pass on.

That is unfortunate for those left with all the responsibility and no directions. What about knowing how to access insurance policies, making decisions on what should happen to pet(s), trying to guess what type of funeral to arrange and attempt to fairly divide or part with material possessions, and so many other painful decisions… all while processing grief.

The truth is that most people are not prepared for the day a health crisis, accident, or death hits home. And the majority don’t ever discuss this and then they are blindsided when life takes an unexpected turn.

There is tremendous value in putting things in order so that your legacy is a positive one.

My name is Stacey Golden-Lisnock and I am passionate about helping people to be prepared in advance of any situation that could leave their family in a chaotic frenzy.

All across the world people are living with the consequences of poor planning or no planning in regards to a change in health or the passing of a loved one.

In my role as a financial advocate, I’ve helped many people to get a better understanding of why they should be prepared. It does first take

           understanding

before any action can take place.

It is oh so disappointing to find out that someone has passed and has not prepared their family for the inevitable event. You can only imagine, if it hasn’t happened to you, how hard it is to get the needed paperwork and get access to important information if no instructions or advance planning is in place.

It would be like being in a relay race and the baton is coming your way - for the hand off – but you had no idea you are in a relay race! Do you think you would catch the baton, or would it likely be badly fumbled?

It can be difficult to get people to want to sit still long enough to get the needed information together.

I found there are three different reactions to this question,

“Why haven’t you taken action to ensure a positive legacy?

           Answer 1

I have an idea that there is more I need to take care of but I’m busy with other matters and other concerns right now – it’s way down on my list of priorities – it will have to wait.

           Answer 2

I don’t recognize there is work to do – I won’t be convinced nor do I have any plans to be concerned at this time in my life – It’s not on my radar.

           Answer 3

I feel the urgency, I understand the seriousness, I want to take action – I’m just not sure where to start or who to trust to help me.

If you see yourself in any of those 3 reactions then you are in the right place to get some good suggestions which are designed to move you to take action. Since you never know when things will change. So many things can

           and do

happen with no warning. Then the chaos begins and it’s real when it happens in your family.

While I am constantly in the conversation, others like you come in and get their legacy needs taken care of and move on and live their life. I will continue having the conversation since everyone needs to know that they hold the key to their loved ones’ future (to the degree that the legacy they leave ultimately affects the quality of life for those left to deal with all of the loose ends and settling of an estate.)

We hate to imagine a scenario where we can’t be there for our loved ones, but take a moment now to do just that.

Would they be left to mourn in peace or would they be thrust into the stressful situation of trying to get your affairs in order?

Would they know what type of funeral you want?

Would they know how to access all of the bills and accounts to be resolved?

Could they get into your house, Wi-Fi, bank accounts and are they aware of your hidden treasures?

Do you know if your pet(s) will end up in a loving situation?

Most people will say, "NO", "NO", "NO", and "NO".

Don’t be Most People! Stand in the flow. Be the example in the crowd. Help the rest of your circle get prepared too, for their ticket will also get punched one (random) day. Model what legacy is for future generations. That is truly a gift you have to give others.

Without help are you going to have all your documents organized so that you and your family can be better prepared in the event of a health crisis, accident, or death? Will you keep yourself accountable and complete the project? Will you think of everything?

As a financial professional with over 30 years of planning experience in the financial services industry I’ve seen how people seem to think (and believe) that time is unlimited and the best time to get stuff taken care of is tomorrow.

Many turn a blind eye to the reality that bad stuff happens in life. Somehow by not being prepared we are saying, “it won’t happen to me”.

We all do this and I am guilty, too.

Sometimes we get a wake-up call like I did when I became ill and was rushed to the emergency room by ambulance on December 31st, 2017. Before that day, I too preferred to believe I had plenty of time to get things done.

But this way of thinking can have dire consequences. Life and death decisions that need to be made without knowing the wishes of the person can be life changing for the one who is forced to make difficult decisions. Those types of decisions can break families apart. Pets can be carted off to the pound once the owner passes away or is moved to a nursing home IF prior arrangements haven’t been made. Children can end up in foster care. Insurance policies can get cancelled for non-payment if a person falls ill or suffers from dementia and fails to keep up with the bills. Houses can go into foreclosure or even sold out from under the owner as a result of unpaid property tax.

Since we don’t know how much time is left, does it seem reasonable to say that the time to get everything up to date and in order is when you are healthy and cognitively sharp? It is never too early to get this done, but it can definitely be too late.

Do you know the statistics on dementia? Last I heard – and you can check Google to see if I’m right – I heard that 1 in 3 seniors (over age 80) will have some form of dementia. The one we hear most about is Alzheimers. Remember those people were like you and me not too long ago. It is happening to 33% of the senior population. They are living out their life in a detached reality. That alone should be very concerning to people, but again the blind eye gets credit here and most people are not prepared.

Because of my personal story combined with my years as a financial planner I’ve been fortunate to be able to teach others what I have learned. As a bonus, I have turned out to be a pretty good resource for referrals and resources of other needed services.

I’m aware that we each have unique situations and the family dynamic is a big piece of the puzzle. But, whether you realize it or not we all are creating our legacy. And without taking any action to be prepared in advance of a health crisis, accident, or death, you’ve made an (unconscious) decision to leave a disorganized mess for someone else to deal with. And that is NOT the definition of a stress-free legacy, is it?

Q: What are the most important factors when menu planning for seniors?

There are several factors I consider – whether the food tastes good; like familiar foods e.g. classic meatloaf, pot roast; sometimes adventurous foods; presentation is key – must look good, be colorful and balanced

Q: What does a healthy meal look like? At breakfast? Lunch? Dinner?

Breakfast – pretty open for what they want such as scrambled eggs, breakfast meat, and a grain such as waffles, pancakes, toast – especially raisin toast, they love raisin toast.

Lunch – a balance between sandwiches and a hot meal – roast beef dip, pasta bake; fresh made daily soups – made from scratch as store-bought are too full of sodium

Dinner – the heaviest meal as this is most preferred by the residents. I provide 2 different options at both meals – soup of the day, garden salad and then beef or pork and a choice of chicken or fish – a vegetable and starch – the latter changes with every meal – I provide a large variety and if for example, someone doesn’t like the potatoes with one meal we can substitute it with starch from another meal – we are flexible.

Q: When do you serve the largest meal of the day – lunch or dinner? Why?

Dinner as that’s what they like

Q: How do you handle catering to special diets?

With special diets, I first discuss the diet with the resident. I train my staff on special diets – chopped, mechanical soft, pureed – we are not intimidated by special diets. We try to give them the same presentation as the regular food. For diets such as vegetarian we don’t just give them sides – we understand what kind of meals they had at home and design a menu for them based on that – we want to make them feel at home.

Q: Where do you source your foods? Costco? Farmer’s market? Other? Why this approach? Impact of the seasons on your food choices?

“other” – there are state regulations in California as to where you can source your foods – for example, you cannot go to farmer’s markets. You can go to Costco but I don’t. I use a local produce supplier in Nipomo and then most of what I need comes from Cisco.

Q: How do you decide on portion sizes? Breakfast? Lunch? Dinner?

Portion sizes are regulated in California as well as our company has guidelines. We set the portion sizes and then allow people to have more or less as desired

Q: I hear that as we age we have less taste buds and it is more difficult to detect salt and bitterness. Do you believe this and if so how do you address this for your residents?

My residents are super salt-sensitive – they notice – we manage by providing salt on the low end – meals are not too sweet or salty – and we have salt and pepper shakers in the dining room if they need more flavoring.

Q: Do you believe certain foods enhance brain function, increase mental performance, and decrease the risk of memory loss for older adults? If you do, what foods do you serve to address this?

I believe the amount of sugar can affect long term mental state. Not sure of foods that address brain function.

Q: What role do snacks play for your residents?

Snacks play a huge role in our community – they are used as an activity e.g. happy hours, summertime popsicles and ice cream sandwiches and more.

Q: What resident menu requests do you find the most difficult to handle?

           We can handle anything

Q: How do you ensure your residents get enough water and stay hydrated?

We have a hydration station in the lobby – residents pass it three times a day – it features water, cranberry juice, OJ and snacks such as fresh fruit, cookies, chips and pretzels

Q: How does meal planning differ for assisted living versus memory care, if at all?

No difference – the menu is the same in both communities.

Q: What role do your residents play in menu planning?

A big role – we have a food council that meets once a month with myself. It is open to all and we usually have 10-20 come and give feedback – I ask them about old favorites and the recipes – I then incorporate these ideas into the menu

Q: How has COVID-19 impacted your kitchen and operations, if at all?

It has made it very challenging for dining in the dining room – when there are active cases the dining room is closed. We then offer room service – the same meals are delivered in warming carts, we go door to door serving meals in the rooms 3 times a day. Once we are clear again we will open up again but then 2 weeks later we closed down again. It’s been almost a year of back and forth – our first shutdown was in last March and for 7 months. It has been up and down but we hope to open again next week.

outlines in depth the process for moving into an assisted living or memory care facility. It goes into great detail in terms of how to approach the design and set up of each room. The speaker asks the audience questions about what to expect during the process from how many sets of linen to include to what utensils will you need in a kitchenette. The packing and unpacking process is much more complex than one would imagine.

covers the role of the Senior Real Estate Specialist in working with seniors during the home buying and selling process. The unique skills and benefits of a SRES are clearly outlined. The presentation also covers the big question of whether to sell or rent one’s home in preparation for a move to assisted living.

The decision to move from home to a care facility is very difficult for most seniors. In the past, people who needed extra assistance had two options: stay home with a family caregiver or go to a nursing home.

Today, seniors have many more choices

           !

Two types of senior living facilities frequently discussed are Assisted Living Communities and Skilled Nursing Homes. Both of these types of living areas are suited for seniors who require some assistance with their care. Although they are both able to house a wide range of ability levels, there are some very pointed differences between the two.

           Living Quarters

Nursing homes have more of an institutional feel than assisted living communities. Residents at nursing homes may be there for long-term care or for shorter stays while recovering from an illness or surgery. Some nursing homes in California have medi-cal beds for long term care. There is usually a long wait list to get such a bed and hard to get unless you are coming from a hospital setting. Assisted Living residents tend to be long-term occupants - only leaving when they require more care than an Assisted Living facility can provide.

At either type of facility, seniors can expect to see a common dining room and living areas and a wide array of scheduled activities. Residents will typically have their own bedroom and bathroom. Some assisted living communities also provide a small kitchenette in the private living spaces.

           Level of Care Provided

The staff at both nursing homes and assisted living communities can provide assistance with cares like bathing, dressing, medication management, and toileting. Also included with the cost of living is cleaning services and daily meals.

For seniors with complex medical needs, a nursing home will be able to provide extra care. Nursing homes can house seniors who need constant assistance and medical intervention.

           Staff Training

The level of education required for employment in senior living facilities varies from state to state. Generally speaking, employees at nursing homes have higher training requirements than the staff in assisted living communities.

Each type of facility is typically required to have a nurse on staff. The nurses oversee medication management, communicate with doctors, and perform more complex procedures than the rest of the staff are able to. For assisted living facilities, nursing staff may only be required to be on the premises a certain number of hours each week. Nursing homes are required to have nursing staff available around the clock.

All professional caregivers are given training on tasks like lifting, performing cares, and maintaining resident privacy laws. Most nursing homes require caregivers to maintain a state-sponsored certification. In assisted living communities, the requirements are more lax and training is handled differently by each employer.

           Costs

The monthly cost of living in these facilities can vary drastically between locations. In assisted living communities, residents will either pay an all-inclusive price or pay a base rent with an additional charge for the amount of care required. Nursing homes are significantly more expensive and charge an all-inclusive price. Costs can range from $10,000+ each month (national average is $6,000 per month) in a nursing home in California. The national average cost of one bedroom in an assisted living community is around $3,500 per month while in California costs are at least $5000 a month.

Seniors who can no longer live at home need to be aware of all of their options. Each facility will have its own list of amenities and care options. You need to consider all of your options before making any big decisions.

5 Ways Memory Care is Unique

Almost all of us will have times where we misplace our keys or forget to call someone back. This, on its own, is no cause for panic. Changes in memory are common as we age. It becomes a cause for concern when the changes in memory interfere with our ability to stay safe and make rational decisions.

If you notice that your loved one is experiencing bouts of confusion, unexplained aggression, or displaying an irrational thought process, talk to their doctor. They may have a condition like Alzheimer’s or another type of dementia that is causing these issues. Although rates of Alzheimer's Disease have been in decline, the Alzheimer’s Association says that 1 in 10 Americans over 65 is living with the disease.

People with these types of memory issues are often unable to live at home. Fortunately, memory care - specialized living centers that cater to this population - are available in almost every community. They are different from nursing homes and assisted living facilities in a number of ways.

           Amount of Staff and Residents

Memory care facilities are typically smaller and have a more home-like feel than other senior living options. They typically have at least 1 staff member for every 6 residents. This is considerably lower than most other types of care facilities.

           Staff Training

People with memory disorders come in all ranges of physical ability. In addition to having more staff, the people who work in memory care units undergo special training that equips them to deal with the unique challenges that their residents face. These staff are not only equipped to help with cares like grooming and bathing; they also are experts at making confused and vulnerable residents feel safe.

           Resident Engagement

Most senior living facilities hold social events and activities throughout the day. At a traditional community, this may include games, parties, and entertainers. In a memory care facility, the residents typically have problems with concentration and following directions. The staff ensure that each activity has been modified to be engaging and fun for people with memory loss. This is an important part of keeping your loved one happy and comfortable.

           Security Features

Wandering is a very common behavior for people with dementia. Memory care facilities have extra security features like door alarms and high fences to prevent residents from getting lost. All common areas are supervised 24 hour a day, and many facilities require staff to document resident locations within the home to monitor for restlessness and wandering tendencies.

Maintaining a comforting environment is especially important for residents in memory care facilities who might not remember where they are. Experts in memory loss are frequently consulted during design and construction. Memory care units typically feature brighter colors and more natural light than other senior living options. They also will often make design choices that will exclude dangers and will encourage helpful behaviors like socializing in common areas or stimulating appetites in the dining areas.

Common Behaviors In People With Dementia (PWD)

It all begins with an idea.

All people with dementia have a unique experience and unique needs. If your loved one is experiencing dementia, the most important thing for you to remember is to stay patient. This disease can make a person do very uncharacteristic things. Their reality can seem very warped to someone without the disease. It’s important for you to realize that

           this is their reality

           .

There are several aspects of the disease that most people with dementia will experience. Help prepare yourself for common behaviors you might see in your loved one by reading the list below.

           Agitation

Agitation encompasses a long list of behaviors like physical and verbal aggression, irritability, and sleeplessness. Sometimes, you won’t be able to tell why your loved one is angry. All you can do is provide them with a safe environment and help them stay calm.

Speak in a soothing voice and avoid activities that will give a person with dementia a spike in energy (drinking caffeine or consuming large amounts of sugar). Allow the person to be as independent as they safely can and acknowledge their frustration.

           Wandering

People with dementia wander for a variety of reasons. They could be looking for someone, they might be in search of bathroom, or they might not know where they are and be looking to leave.

You can help by redirecting them in a comforting way. If your loved one is trying to leave, redirect them by saying something like, “We are going to be eating lunch in 15 minutes. Please stay for that.” or “I was thinking about watching an episode of I Love Lucy. Will you watch with me?”.

You can also redirect wandering by offering the person with dementia a familiar activity that helps them feel needed. Folding washcloths, putting napkins on the dinner table, or sorting items by color might engage the person with dementia and prevent wandering.

           Repeating

It is very common for people with dementia to repeat themselves. They may ask the same questions or tell the same stories. This can be very frustrating for a caregiver, but it is important that you don’t lose your patience or tell the person with dementia that they already asked.

Many people feel anxiety about upcoming events if they don’t know all the details. Avoid mentioning future plans until immediately before they begin. Also, you may find it helpful to put the answers to common questions in writing. A sign on the table that says, “Lunch is at 11:30.” will help relieve some anxiety for the person with dementia and prevent extra frustration for the caregiver.

           Sundowning

Many people with dementia experience extra behaviors that happen as it gets dark outside. This is a common time for visitors to be leaving which can cause extra anxiety. Additionally, many people with dementia have a difficult time telling whether it is daytime or nighttime. The events of the day can leave your loved one feeling exhausted and extra agitated by sunset.

It is helpful to engage in quiet and calming behaviors after the final meal of the day. You may also find it beneficial to turn on all interior lights and shut all of the shades before the sun sets.

           Paranoia

A person with dementia is very often confused about their surroundings. Imagine this scenario: you’re in an unfamiliar place, you don’t recognize anyone around you, and you can’t find your purse/jacket/wallet. How do you feel?

You likely are feeling scared. You might feel like someone is playing a trick on you by hiding your belongings. Things may even feel more sinister than a practical joke. It’s important for you to be a calming presence for your loved one - even if they don’t recognize you. Phrases like, “Your jacket is in the washing machine.” or “I’ll take care of you” are reassuring to the person with dementia because it makes them feel like someone is taking them seriously and is in control of the situation. You may also find it helpful to redirect them to another activity.

           Disinterest in Food

We all lose some of our taste buds as we age. A person with dementia might not remember that they need to eat and drink. Certain medications can also make their mouth taste strangely, so they will have less interest in eating.

People with dementia may not be convinced that they should eat a large meal when they don’t feel hungry. You can help your loved one get their necessary energy by offering small, healthy snacks like fresh fruit and nuts several times during the day.

           Incontinence and Changing in Hygiene

Personal hygiene is often an issue for people with dementia. They may not remember that they need to bathe, they may not know they haven’t used the toilet recently, and they may not realize that they haven’t changed their clothes recently.

You can help by providing gentle reminders (statements work better than questions) to use the toilet at least once every two hours. “ Ok, we’re going to eat soon. Let’s stop by the bathroom now.” People with dementia will also need reminders to change their clothing. If they are hesitant to accept help, lay a clean outfit on their bed. Then say, “There are clean clothes on your bed. Please change so I can wash this outfit.”

These behaviors are not uncommon, so don’t feel bad asking for help! Caring for a person with dementia can be frustrating. Stay patient and remember that your loved one is still there - even if it doesn’t always seem that way.

Most seniors will reach a point when they no longer are safe living at home. Fortunately, seniors today have several different options that weren’t available to their parents or grandparents. There is a wide range of Community Living options that can meet the needs of any person - no matter how much (or little) extra help they need.

           Independent Senior Living/Retirement Community

These communities are a great first step for your loved one who can no longer live alone, but is still relatively independent. Residents living in these setting enjoy perks like extra companionship, transportation, assistance with cleaning or meal prep, and social events. These places don’t typically offer care (assistance with tasks like dressing, using the bathroom, or bathing), but they might be able to connect you with a professional caregiver who can schedule visits with your loved one.

Moving to a new place can be a scary step for your loved one. Moving to an Retirement Community can be a great first step for a senior who is hesitant to make that leap.

           Assisted Living

These communities offer more advanced assistance than an Independent Senior Living Community. Residents here can expect assistance with medication management, using the bathroom, and dressing. They also include meals and activities. Depending on your state’s regulations, these communities are required to have relationships with medical professionals. Many have an RN on staff and keep open communications with your loved one’s doctor.

Understanding the pricing structure of an Assisted Living Facility can be tricky. Some charge only a fixed price, while other will have a base rate plus additional money dependent on the amount of care needed. Make sure that you understand how a community’s price is calculated before making any decisions.

           Residential Care Homes

These are the most cost-effective options for seniors who require 24-hour care. Residents in these homes enjoy a home-like setting that they share with usually 5 but up to 10 other seniors. These communities offer the same benefits as an Assisted Living Community in a smaller setting with a fewer residents per caregiver. They are a good choice for dementia patients who could benefit from a smaller living environment.

           Skilled Nursing Home

Nursing homes have more of an institutional feel than the other senior living options listed above. There are two types of Skilled Nursing Homes: Acute and Long Term Care. An Acute Nursing Home is for senior needing specialized care for a short period of time. If your loved one is recovering from surgery or healing from an illness, an Acute Nursing Home is a great short-term option for them. A Long Term Care Nursing Home is better suited for senior who need constant medical care and round-the-clock assistance.

           Memory Care

Many senior living facilities have a separate area designated for residents with significant memory issues. There are also standalone buildings that serve as dedicated Memory Care facilities. These are a great option if your loved one is suffering from Dementia, Alzheimers, or some other condition that greatly impacts their cognitive function. These communities hold special licensing and take extra precautions to help keep their residents safe.

Caring for your aging loved one is a very difficult task. At times, it can feel overwhelming. Many caregivers report feeling emotionally or physically exhausted as a result of their caregiving duties. This is called Caregiver Burnout. Don’t worry! There are things you can do to avoid (or lessen) caregiver burnout.

Get Organized and Find a Routine

Being a caregiver means keeping track of everything for your loved one. You need to know their schedule and help with their finances - maybe you even manage their medications. Once everything is organized in one area, it feels much more manageable!

To start, get a few folders to separate medical, financial, and personal paperwork. You’ll also want to use a calendar or planner to keep track of all appointments and upcoming social events.

When you and Mom return from a doctor’s visit, any paperwork goes straight into the medical folder. If there is a medical emergency where Mom needs to go to the doctor with someone other than you, everything is easy to find and the doctors have all the medical information that they need to make quick, informed decisions for Mom’s care.

Your financial folder is where you’ll store things like bank statements and bills. Even if Mom is still handling her own checkbook, you’ll find it handy to keep all of this information together. Most seniors will require some help with their finances at one point or another.

Any other documents that you might need to reference quickly go into the personal folder. If Mom’s cable goes out, you’ll be glad to know exactly where to find the contact information for tech support. This is also a great place to store things like phone number for the neighbor kid who mows the lawn or shovels the snow.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

Caregiver Burnout can happen easily when you take on too many tasks. Dad probably has plenty of friends and neighbors who would be happy to help out with little things. When someone says, “Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.,” take them up on it!

You don’t need to delegate anything too difficult or too personal. Every little thing that you can have someone else do is one less thing to have on your mind. Being a caregiver can take up all of your free time if you let it! Make sure that you’re finding some time to focus only on your needs.

It’s not unreasonable for you to ask Dad’s neighbor lady to fill up the bird feeder outside his window once a week as she does her gardening. A friend or family member might be happy to plan to eat lunch with Dad every Wednesday to give you a break. It might be time to have a discussion about hiring someone to come in to help with some of the more difficult tasks like bathing or cleaning.

Help is still available even if you and Dad don’t know anyone in the area! There are volunteer organizations in most cities that can provide assistance. Check with your local Aging and Disability Resource Center, library, or religious groups to see what they can do.

Being a caregiver for your aging parents and loved ones is a very difficult job. You need to do everything you can to make the job as easy as possible and avoid caregiver burnout.

How to Make Your Home Senior Safe

Our joints get more stiff, and we are at a greater risk of falling. There are a lot of simple things you can do to make your home safer for you and your aging loved ones without compromising the cozy and inviting atmosphere you love.

As we age, we lose our balance more often, our eyesight weakens, and we have slower reaction times. Our joints get more stiff, and we are at a greater risk of falling. This means that as we adapt to changing bodies and activity levels, our homes may need some changes too. There are a lot of simple things you can do to make your home safer for you and your aging loved ones without compromising the cozy and inviting atmosphere you love.

           Reduce or Remove Tripping Hazards

A fall can be catastrophic for a senior. If there are rugs in the house, secure them by placing a non-slip mat underneath. Position any power cords so that they are completely hidden and far from any walkways.

If you or your loved one subscribe to magazines or newspapers, get a magazine stand to keep near favorite reading spots. Also, add storage baskets to end tables to store odds and ends like reading glasses, remotes, and flashlights. By removing this type of clutter from end tables, you’re making it less likely that something will fall into the path of a senior with unsteady balance.

           Go Easy on Aching Joints

Find ways to adapt your living area so that your loved one doesn’t need to feel like they’re missing out. Install raised flower beds so that gardening seniors don’t need to kneel on the ground.

Provide storage at different levels. Keep items that are rarely used at higher levels, and store frequently needed items at eye-level or below. Your aging loved one will appreciate still being able to access their closet without needing to bring out the step stool.

Look at the seating options available in your home. Are there sturdy options that are easy to get in and out of? Rocking chairs and chaise lounges are very comfortable, but they can be difficult to stand from. Add comfortable seating options for seniors to your home.

           Prolong Independence with Design Changes

Add extra lighting to make sure that your loved one is able to read and navigate the living space without needing help. Higher wattage bulbs for overhead lights (make sure to check what wattage the socket can handle) and extra lamps can make a huge difference for a senior whose eyesight is not as strong as it once was.

You’ll also want to install grab bars near steps, sinks, toilets, showers, tubs, and anywhere else that the floor may be slippery as your loved one changes positions.

Lastly, change out door knobs (especially in areas that may need to be accessed quickly like exits and bathrooms) for arthritis-friendly hardware. Rounded door knobs can be difficult to grip. Install bar shaped door knobs that can be opened with an elbow in case of emergency.

Our aging loved ones want to remain as independent as they can. Give yourself some piece of mind with these simple fixes to help keep them safe. All of these changes could be made in a single weekend and will provide extra safety in the home for years to come.
